Therapeutic Environments with Alt Architecture & Research Associates LLC

What makes people is based on two primary elements: the DNA we are born with and the environment we are surrounded by.

Since September, I have been knee deep and going deeper, into the psychological trauma’s and moral injuries brought home by those who have been to war.

I’ve had the unfortunate experience of seeing it first hand through my cousin and her family. Her husband, a Marine accidentally stepped in an I.E.D. blowing up major parts of himself and a few of his buddies.

The good part about this story is that there was actually a sniper nearby ready to take him out officially. This “accident” saved his life.

The NY Times article, In Unit Stalked by Suicide, by David Philipps clearly illustrates the detriment faced by warriors once they return home.

The more I read it, the more I cry.

Prior to running into Paul Alt (a fellow yogi) at a coffee shop, I had been focused on my artistic skill set of creating environment. Considering ways in which this could be pitched to move my career forward.

And so it is!

Alt Architecture and Research Associates LLC is dedicated to developing therapeutic environments as a tool for healing, experiential education, and community building.

Our work for warriors, Veterans and their families has its origins in our collaboration with inner-city youth, teachers and multi-disciplinary teams including behavioral health experts.

Paul Alt has such a great understanding of what it takes to process, that I am lead to believe that simply by working on this project I am also healing my own wounds.

I am certainly being given the tools.

My one day a week, writing press releases,  can be slightly daunting since it is my job to speak the language fluently.

So to stay abreast I spend my personal time listening to Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried on tape, and watching other war films. Interesting to note, is how much courage I have to muster just to turn on Band of Brothers I am THAT SCARED of the fighting scenes.

An interesting comparison in consideration of the Veterans and what they have had to experience first hand.

If you begin to feel, you begin to heal

Accepting Avoidance

Avoidance is a road block on the path to completion.

One that we all face.

Welcome, to Monday!! It’s almost 4 o’clock and I’ve been busy the majority of the day. Laundry, breakfast, dishes, eliminating paper items. Avoiding my inbox.

Everybody has their own system of “task management.”

One fellow Enterpriser insists on cleaning the kitchen before settling into his office to get down to business. As a Capricorn Sun, with Virgo in my 1st House, I am absolutely unable to “Get to Work!” until my surroundings are clean.

Beyond even this most basic of avoidance methods. The number one reason that drives me to my blog most frequently is the ability to avoid diving into the more serious of projects.

WHY?!? Do we work so hard at keeping ourselves away from that wonderful feeling of accomplishment.

Probably because we don’t think of it like that.

In terms of accomplishment that is.

(Btw. I just went & washed two days worth of dishes before jotting the last two paragraphs).

So, here is an idea- use chores to break up the heavy work. Rather than as an excuse to stay away from it.

My two days of dishes took all of 13 minutes to make clean and I wiped down the counter!

The pause from my work allowed  me to think about what was going to come next. It also gave me the opportunity to get up off of my seat.

Another way to tackle your big tasks is to break them down. For example, before selling buttons on e-bay I first dedicated an afternoon to sorting them. I also just took the time to label my calendar book to make flipping through months an easier task.

Good Luck, ya’ll!!

I’m ready to jump into what matters.

7 Steps to Success

  1. A title : seems a bit silly, except that it’s totally necessary to give a name to what you’re doing. My preference leans towards poetic tongue twisters which accurately describe the base function. i.e. Bridge Building Business Professional or Closet Consultant. Although

  2. E-mail Signature: Include a phone number, your business title, & LINKS!!

  3. Yelp Page

  4. Google Map

  5. Smile: even more silly than #1 huh. A smile is a winner every time! It will open doors for you & encourage potentials to move in your direction instead of the other direction. It also gives the message that you LOVE what you do. And, if you don’t than why are you doing it?

  6. Consistency

  7. Commitment

Yelp Me

image

In effort to build steam I ask all who I work with to Yelp me.
In doing so I’ve learned two things:
1. Endings are not always as welcomed as one would hope. People are my schooling.
2. A Yelp review won’t even be posted if its written by an inexperienced newby.

To counter act the second issue I’ve taken to “checking in.” With pictures.

In honor of the first I’m officially writing up contracts. And, adhering to my gut knowings.

Finally, I’ve decided that it’s a wise decision to write about Failures. As well as Successes. Because it’s in failing that we get the Lessons.

Six Week Sculpture Pose at the Evanston Art Center

Six Week Sculpture Pose at the Evanston Art Center

XXX: Edited down my library which DELETED my photo’s in posts.

An unexpected trial & error. Please excuse the lack of pictures here.

On week four there was a kink in my neck so huge that my head wouldn’t turn to the right until after an hour & a half yoga session. Brava!

Vulnerability is a big deal in Figure Modeling. When choosing this pose, at first I was working to cover most of my self up. Realizing later how I managed to leave my whole rear end exposed! : )

Luckily. the group I work with in Vincent Hawkin’s class are all top-shelf folks. And, they could care less about my being exposed.

They are too focused on creating my image & likeness out of clay!

Hooray,

: ) ( :

Whattya gonna do about the pain?

Why am I posting a picture of my boobs?

Look beyond the boobage to see the scar.
Look beyond the boobage to see the scar.

Please, take a closer look. Notice the scar that sits between them.

I used to joke that it was from a breast reduction. Haha!! I have super tiny tits. Funnier than that is when people believe me.

As a Figure Model, I find it intriguing how so many artists fail to include this very important aspect of me.

In this business, folks are supposed to draw what they see. Yet, this is the first one in a year to include my scar.

In reality, I was born with a heart murmur. At twelve I went to the doctor for some common kid ailment. The doctor of the house was out that day, luckily. His stand in noticed my abnormal heart beat.

Open heart surgery was put on the table immediately.

The second reason for my making this post today is the joke that coincided with it. Breast surgery. Woman have work done on their breasts to eliminate cancer too.

A favored sculpture student, Blaire, is a Tai Chi teaching grandma who raised her family in New York making waves through the 60’s. She had massive tumors removed from her breasts yesterday. I pray that she’s okay.

Maybe those who draw me would rather not think about what I had to go through to get the scar across my chest– as reason to ignore it.

Perhaps, it is easier for us to focus on anything but the pain. It is art class after all.

In conclusion, keep Blaire in your prayers. And, all the other woman out there who suddenly have to go through life without their breasts.

Thank you,

Work Space

Space, Space, Space. This post is all about SPACE!

As young entrepreneur I have found (to my own chagrin) the necessity of the proper environment for getting down to business!

This pursuit has taken me many places. Has even motivated me to move in some cases!

Perhaps, this could become a Category for my writing. And, in fact blogging about Public Libraries is how this bloggirl began her career. (Inspiration can come from anywhere, BAM!)

Now, dwelling lake side in the top hat of our city, Rogers Park! I arrived to town puzzled on where to get work done.

First, let’s discuss the motivating factor of getting out of the house: IT HELPS! At present, I live with a man who counsels people in the room next to mine. Receives phone calls throughout the day. Our walls are paper thin. And, my initial desk placement put me working right in-line with the afternoon sun.

Having set up a coffee table at the edge of my bed, I prefer to work there propped up by a block.

After a week of accepting my own unemployment budget yesterday brought about an extreme case of cabin fever & I HAD TO GET OUT!! : )

Attempting initially to stick within the $0 budget and began by heading off to the NEW Edgewater Library. Which quickly reminded me of what it means to be “institutionalized.” A rant for a different day. No seating near windows. Flourescnt lighting overhead. And, worse a crappy internet connection.

Now, let’s elaborate on the Public Library Problem. Not a single one of them opens before 10am. Most open at noon- which is absolutely ridiculous! Who starts work at noon? And, they all CLOSE way too soon. 5pm on Friday??

My budgetary dreams intend to cut down on police forces & open library doors.

Coffee Shop Blues

Waking up is hard to do…

image

Spending time at the local artists cafe today. It’s absolutely 37 degrees and beautiful outside!!

Late February teases me with Spring.

Life is a blender. Pick your ingredients. Toss ’em in & taste what happens.

On February 19th, I mailed off my latest creation to The Tribune Towers.

Making the formal request for
Chicago to Smile Daily.

I have this unceasing desire to “individuate.”

So, that I may originate. Contemplate. Get out there & make my way!!
Get outta my way! : )

My mind opted for wakefulness last night. Now today I am drinking coffee. Slowly.

There comes a time when being self-centered is absolutely appropriate. A friend once said that “nobody dated in med school.”

Doctor is on the Accomplishment List.
In order to help others you must first help your self.
